GRAD CORNER

Consider Community College

The field of education, and more specifically post-secondary education, may already be a career aspiration for some of you. You may be exploring post-doctoral opportunities that will allow you to continue your research and present teaching assignments as a portion of your work. For others, your research may take you away from the university into industry and commercial ventures. In all of this, the community college may be completely ignored. I would challenge you to reconsider the community college. Why? If you are considering an academic career, there are certain advantages a two-year campus offers.

First is the sheer number of opportunities. If you ignore community colleges you may be reducing your potential job opportunities by as much as a third. Can you afford to ignore that many possible positions? Second, that number of opportunities may be increasing due to increasing enrollments and retiring full-time faculty. Third, if you have a passion for teaching, the community college may be exactly where you should be looking. Community colleges are primarily about teaching . . . not research, not grant funding, not publishing. Teaching. It’s important to note that the expectation of publishing that is most frequently the hallmark of tenure at four-year institutions rarely exists at two-year campuses.

Are there drawbacks to teaching at the community college?

Certainly. First, as full-time faculty, expect a heavy teaching load. Teaching five courses each semester is a typical load for community college faculty. In addition to teaching, you will be expected to serve on committees, keep regular office hours and advise students. Does this preclude research? No, but any research you choose to pursue will probably be outside a normal 40 hour work week. And your students may not be as well prepared to do college level work as students at a four year campus. This may require more effort on your part regarding instruction and presentation of course materials.

So why do so few graduate students consider opportunities at the community college level?

There are probably a number of reasonable answers to this question, but the most often cited reason is prestige. This prestige may be real or merely perceived, but as we move from secondary education to graduate study, the community college is found on the lowest rung. Are you going to feel like a "real professor" at a community college? Are your graduate school peers and colleagues going to take you seriously if you take a position at a community college? And does this matter to you?

There are a couple of things to consider as you reflect on these questions. If status is your main focus, perhaps academic life isn’t your real calling. Let’s face it; if you’re seeking celebrity, education is probably not the most practical medium. Yet, there is prestige for the community college faculty. Within their field and locale, they are frequently experts in the local community. They also have the larger network of community college educators in which to develop expertise and even celebrity. All this aside, perhaps a better place to focus is the need that the community college fills.

An increasingly greater number of students find entry to higher education through the community college. Students from lower socioeconomic status, ethnic minorities, as well as older students seeking to improve or change their career path often begin at the community college. As a community college professor, you may have the opportunity to inspire a scholar, an entrepreneur, an inventor or innovator who might not otherwise have the encouragement to move beyond what is already known and familiar. If you’re intrigued by the possibility of nurturing inquisitive minds and sparking an interest in those fields of study, consider the possibility of teaching in the community college.

Campus Interviewing is great but it is not the "only" way that you can connect with top employers for jobs and internships. Be sure you are using ALL of the tools available to you through UA Career Services. HOT TOPICS has more.

Each month the GRAD CORNER will focus on career issues of interest to graduate students specifically. This week, Jeff Patten, M.A., Career Services Specialist, Senior, takes a look at diversity issues in the job search.

For all of you conservation-minded types out there, get ready! The Student Conservation Association (SCA) will be on campus early next month with MANY internship opportunities around the country. See ANNOUNCEMENTS for more info.

Use All the Tools

How will I recruit thee? Let me count the ways. Savvy employers use a variety of outreach strategies to offer their job and internship opportunities to UA students. They know all too well that it isn't easy to get on a busy student's radar screen. This article highlights several of the ways that employers recruit UA students on campus.

Campus Interviewing

Each semester many employers set-up job and internship listings, as well as schedule interviews, through your UA Career Services department. You'll need to be registered for Campus Interviewing specifically to participate. This entails completing an online orientation, uploading a resume into Wildcat JobLink, and then stopping by Career Services to have your account activated. You can then search for Campus Interviewing opportunities through Wildcat JobLink and submit your resume for those that interest you. Go to the CAMPUS INTERVIEWING webpage for the quick online orientation and further instructions on how to register.

Current Job and Internship Listings

The Wildcat JobLink system also includes a variety of job and internship opportunities in addition to Campus Interviewing. These opportunities are open exclusively to UA students and alumni. Currently, there are over 1000 job and internship listings. Many employers that will not be visiting the campus in person choose to post their job and internship opportunities on this side of the Wildcat JobLink system. Follow employer instructions on how to apply for these positions.

Career Fairs

There are several career fairs that happen each semester. All of the career fairs are listed on the Career Services Web site under Career Fairs and Events. Career Services does not sponsor every career fair on campus, but we do want you to take advantage of them. Whether it is the Engineering Industry Expo, Career Expo, Career Showcase, or Career Services' own UA Spring Career Days 2008 you can, and should, attend. Bring several (20-30) copies of your resume and practice your One-Minute Commercial so that you have something to say to these recruiters.

Employer Information Sessions

Many employers hold information sessions, usually the night before a career fair or Campus Interview visit. Did you miss a deadline to submit your resume through Campus Interviewing? Then an employer information session is a chance to meet the recruiters and convince them that they should interview you. Some information sessions are mandatory, meaning that you must attend if you are going to interview with a certain company or organization. Some information sessions are held simply for the recruiter to talk about their organization, and the positions that they have available. Employer information session dates and times are listed on each Campus Interview listing in Wildcat JobLink.

Other

Some employers recruit by contacting individual academic departments. Check with your department office to see if there are any job or internship listings held specifically for your major.

Uniquely You

Are you a minority student, a GLBT student or a student with a physical disability? If so, this segment is especially for you. You may ask why career information should be any different for you than for anyone else? Ideally, it shouldn’t, but just as some academic programs are a better fit than others, so too, may some employers or working environments provide a friendlier place for your career to develop.

While it is illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, marital status or physical disability, sexual orientation is not a universally protected status. Even for employers whose corporate policy does provide for non-discrimination against GLBT persons, there may exist regional differences in how that policy is applied. In any case, perhaps the best approach to the situation is using the skills you’ve developed in grad school . . . research.

You are a unique and valuable commodity to an array of potential employers. Employers continue to seek a diverse and talented workforce. But what do you know about potential employers? Have you done your homework on which employers offer a friendly supportive work environment? Are you aware of employers who recruit candidates with physical disabilities, not merely comply with ADA requirements? Do you know which employers actively recruit Native American, African American, Latino or Asian American employees? If you’re GLBT, do you know which corporations offer domestic partner benefits? If not, you’ve got some research to do. But you’re not alone and there is help as near as the closest Internet connection.

Below you can find a variety of on-line resources dealing with various aspects of diversity in the workplace.

Student Conservation Association (SCA) in the house!

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is a nonprofit organization that offers conservation internships and summer trail crew opportunities to more than 3,000 students of ALL MAJORS each year. SCA is focused on developing conservation and community leaders while getting important work done on the land. Founded in 1957 to restore and protect America’s public lands and preserve them for future generations, SCA remains committed to this goal today.

SCA members complete projects in every conservation discipline - from archeology to zoology - and everything in between. SCA's mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. Travel, basic living expenses, student loan deferment, housing and medical insurance are among the many benefits for interns.

SCA will be conducting an information session at UA Career Services (Student Union Memorial Center - Room #411) on Monday, March 3rd, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. SCA will also be on the UA Mall at various times on Monday and Tuesday, March 3rd and 4th.

Now What?

So you went to one or more of the career fairs this week? Great! After all of that energy and excitement you may find yourself scratching your head and asking, "Where do I go from here?" Remember one important thing: follow-up. Whether after a career fair, job interview, information session, or even a chance meeting with a helpful professional, follow-up is a sure sign of professionalism. Most do not bother with it, be the one who does. Follow-up should be done within 24-48 hours of any significant conversation with a potential employer, but "late" is better than "not at all." Just do it.

How should you follow-up?

There are many ways to follow-up. Some employers prefer a telephone call, others prefer email, and still others enjoy the "personal touch" of a well-crafted letter, or handwritten thank-you note via snail mail. You might even try a combination approach, say, a thoughtful thank-you note and a later phone call (or email) to confirm that they received your original message.

What should you say?

First, briefly reintroduce yourself and thank the employer for taking the time to speak with you (at the career fair, interview, meeting, etc). Reaffirm your interest in their company or organization, specific job or internship program. Mention something specific from your conversation, and finish with two or three key reasons why you would be a great fit for their opportunity.

An example "thank-you."

Dear Ms. Tucker,

My name is Wilma Wildcat and I want to thank you for speaking with me at UA Career Days last week. I am very excited about the sales and management internship program with General Mills, and I plan to apply for your program through UA Career Services. I was particularly encouraged to hear about General Mills' strong commitment to customer satisfaction, as it matches my own passion for excellence. I think this makes me an ideal candidate for this outstanding opportunity. I can be reached by cell phone at: 520-370-1111, or by email at wilma.wildcat@gmail.com. I look forward to speaking with you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Time to Get Busy!

Spring Semester features more employers on campus, more career fairs, more opportunities...more, more, more. ALL current students are eligible and even if you graduated in December 2007, you can extend your Campus Interviewing participation for up to two years post-graduation (see Alumni webpage) ...and alumni are ALWAYS welcome at campus career fairs!

If you have had at least three (3) campus interviews you can request interview feedback! We will compile the feedback from at least three recruiters about your interview performance. No, it won't be specific feedback from a specific recruiter, but a compilation of the feedback from several. NOTE: Not all recruiters choose to fill-out interview feedback forms on each student. So we may not have three feedback forms for you even if you had three interviews. Stop by Career Services to request your feedback. We will have it ready for you generally within a few days.

Every Spring Semester many students find excellent jobs and internships with top employers through CAMPUS INTERVIEWING. We bring some of the top employers in the country right here to the UA campus. These employers will be looking for Y-O-U. Tell your friends!

If you are thinking about a great job or internship now or in the future, this one is a no-brainer...register for CAMPUS INTERVIEWING as soon as possible! These employers will be looking for Y-O-U. Tell your friends!
