What is a curriculum vitae?

A curriculum vitae (CV)  is a detailed document that covers an individual's academic history, education, work experience, research experience, teaching experience, academic specialization skills, publications, presentations, and memberships. CVs are much longer than resumes.

A curriculum vitae is commonly used when seeking an academic position and when applying for scientific, research or medical jobs. CVs are also used when submitting manuscripts for publication, during tenure reviews and when applying for grants and fellowships.

Categories for curriculum vitae may include:

  • Contact information: name, address, telephone and email
  • Objective or a Summary of Qualifications
  • Education (all college degrees, graduation dates, master's thesis, doctoral dissertation title/description, name of professors or faculty advisors during dissertation)
  • Special training and knowledge
  • Fellowships, Post-Docs
