Parent & Student Roles: Year 1 - Freshman

Student’s Role

  • Orient himself to the university
  • Use Wildcat JobLink to find a part-time on or off campus job
  • Attend the Wildcat Student Employment Fair to obtain a campus or community part-time job 
  • Keep his options open as he explores the academic world
  • Develop excellent study skills for college
  • Become involved in a student activity or club
  • Establish relationships with her academic advisor and faculty
  • Plan her coursework for the time she will be at the university
  • Investigate part-time jobs
  • Summer: obtain a summer job or volunteer experience

Parent’s Role

  • Encourage your child to make grades a top priority
  • Encourage your daughter to meet with each of her professors and her academic advisor at least once during each semester
  • Talk with your son about the different campus clubs or activities that might match his interests
  • Encourage your son to use Wildcat JobLink, and/or attend the Wildcat Student Employment Fair, to find a part-time job during the semester
  • Encourage your daughter to plan early to find a summer job or volunteer experience that may match her career interests

Career Services’ Role

  • Assist students in finding a part-time job through the use of Wildcat JobLink
  • Host the Wildcat Student Employment Fair 
  • Assist students in finding a summer job or volunteer experience through the use of Wildcat JobLink and the Web
