Internships and Academic Credit

It is now possible to gain academic credit for an internship, even if the internship is not connected to your major. LASC 393/493 is an option for undergraduates in any major with your advisor’s approval. The credits count towards graduation units for undergraduates. LASC 393 and 493 are offered through the Colleges of Letters, Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Academic Advising Center. While almost all students can earn elective credit from these courses, it is imperative that students talk to their academic advisor to confirm how the units will apply to their academic program.

How it works

Visit your academic advisor to discuss your internship and options to earn academic credit.

When you have a definite internship lined up and a designated supervisor, call 520-621-7763 to schedule a time to meet with Sylvia Mioduski. (Note1).

Have your academic advisor email Sylvia (miodusks@email.arizona.edu) to inform a definite internship and a designated supervisor, with their approvals.

Sylvia will then enroll you in LASC 393 (for a first-time internship) or LASC 493 (for a continuing or advanced internship).

Requirements & Expectations for LASC 393/493

  • Be in good academic standing (minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA).
  • Work a minimum of 45 hours to earn 1 unit of credit with a maximum of 6 units of credit that can be earned in 393 and an additional 6 in 493. These credits do NOT count toward the Dean’s list.
  • Complete assigned journals and a final reflective essay.
  • Submit Supervisor’s evaluation.

Note1: CLAS Academic Advising Center does not maintain lists of internships. If you need guidance, they will talk with you about possible sources such as your home department (faculty, advisors, and student organizations), Career Services, organizations/professionals in the field, and online internship sites.
